Forgiveness is often easier to ask for than to give.

“Please forgive me” is easier to say than “I forgive you.”

In this part of the prayer template that Jesus gives us, we see that the two go hand in hand.

“Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.” Luke 11:4

Forgiving others is assumed to happen either before we ask for forgiveness or simultaneously.

We recognize we cannot ask for grace without being willing to extend it ourselves.

Today, as you fast from something for someone, practice the prayer of Jesus. Ask him if there is anyone you need to forgive as you yourself ask for forgiveness. Getting rid of unconfessed sin and unspoken grievances opens up our dialogue with God.

“If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us of all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9

He is able to speak and we are then able to listen.

Our Prayer: God, who do I need to forgive today? And God, will you forgive me?
