Do you suffer from Leadership overload?
You know what I mean?
“Listen to this podcast”
“You should read this blog”
“Here’s a book we all need to read together”
And on and on it goes. After a while all the leadership wisdom starts to sound the same. And it can get overwhelming with all the things I need to do.
I need to be proactive.
I need to set goals.
I need to have a stop doing list.
I need to have vision.
I need to be amongst the people in the day to day.
I need to learn from the past.
Exhausting!
The one thing I’m learning this week that is helping give clarity is the simple wisdom regarding King David.
“He cared for them with a true heart and led them with skillful hands.” (Psalms 78:72)
Two things: a true heart. Skillful hands. That’s it.
You have the right character… and you have the proper competency.
Leaders who try to lead without either don’t lead for long.
Leaders who lead with only one usually start off strong and then have a collapse. They do well, but their lack of character causes them to implode under fame and fortune. Or they have great character, but they can’t pass it along to anyone else and they reach capacity in their leadership.
The true great ones do both.
Leadership development 101 is to develop your character… and develop your skills. Don’t settle for just one.
