16 “No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. 18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.”
Luke 8:16-18
If you are fasting from something and for someone, you will obviously read this passage as Jesus telling you to make sure you make your light known. Go big or go home. Shine your light so bright that everyone you know sees the good news of Jesus.
This has led many people to think they need to at most stand on street corners yelling about the coming of Jesus, and at the least, to wear a Christian t-shirt.
But this passage has more to do with how you listen. Jesus has just given us the parable of the sower (see yesterday). This is about those who want to receive the good news.
The light is glowing in Jesus, now it’s up to us to notice it.
Today, instead of looking for ways to be loud and proud in the face of those we are praying for, let’s take time to look and listen for how Jesus may be already working in their life and what he wants to say to them.
Our Prayer: Jesus, may I see today how you are already at work in the life of my friend. And may I celebrate that with them.
