When you think of those who followed Jesus, we tend to think of the 12 disciples.
Yet, there were a lot more people who were with Jesus during the first year of his ministry. In fact, in the passage we read today, there were 72 counted and sent out in his name to bless and heal people and even cast out demons in the name of Jesus.
When they return, they are very excited about their success.
The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” Luke 10:17
Yet, Jesus seems to be less excited about it.
He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.” Luke 10:18-19
Basically, “been there, done that.” But then he right sizes their focus.
“However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” Luke 10:20
There is nothing more important than someone’s eternal destiny. For both the ones you pray and fast for… and for you.
Our Prayer: Jesus, thank you for saving me.
