As we conclude our days spent on the Lord’s prayer, we get to the last part…that may or not be part of the original prayer of Jesus.
If you learned the Lord’s prayer as a child or remember hearing the song at a wedding, you most likely remember how it ends:
“For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” Matt. 6:13
But spoiler alert – this is only found in the King James Version.
Yep, not in the NIV. Not in the ESV or the NLT.
The reason? This was not in the earliest manuscripts that we have of the prayer and Matthew and Luke’s gospels. But it was most likely added in the 4th century to create a singable ending to this prayer that had become a hymn sung amongst Christians.
That being said, it does encapsulate the essence of the prayer.
Yours is the kingdom. All authority belongs to you.
Yours is the power. All mightiness flows from you.
Yours is the glory. Your victory will be complete.
As we fast and pray for someone…let this be part of your prayer.
Our Prayer: Lord, all authority and might come from you. Please open the heart of my friend. May the begin to find and follow you. May your victory be complete in their life. All for your glory.
