Yesterday we looked at the first of three stories Jesus tells about the heart of his Father.

After the story of the lost sheep, he continues on with a story about a lost coin.

8 “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins[a] and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? 9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
Luke 15:8-10

The loss of this coin would have been devastating in that culture. It represented her dowry, her worth, her prestige. Losing one would have shown the world she was irresponsible and could not be trusted. Finding it would have brought great joy. But what is remarkable in the story is the celebration. She throws a party that probably costs the worth of the coin. What is Jesus telling us?

The key to this text is in verse 10. When a lost one is found, there is rejoicing in heaven. Not by the angels but in the presence of the angels. God the Father is the one with the party hat on! As unheard of as it would have been to throw a costly party to celebrate the finding of a coin, that’s what our Heavenly Father does. Things unheard of.

Our Prayer: Father, thank you for celebrating the lost being found.
