We are only days away from the Super Bowl and personally I have several reasons to hate this game. First off, my team is not in it, and they haven’t been since 1972. Second, the game is never good. And lastly, it’s the final game of the season . The wait for next football season begins. That being said, I do believe God wants us to watch the Super Bowl. I can’t be certain, but I have my theories.  Look at the following pieces of evidence from the Bible:

Proverbs 16:33 “We toss the coin, but it is the Lord who controls its decision”

Sounds like the opening coin flip!

Job 19:7-8 “He has blocked my way so I cannot pass”

This may be a veiled reference to God’s preference for a running game, but football terminology none the less.

Phillippians. 3:13-14 “I press on to win the prize.”

Come on, that sounds like a goal line quarterback sneak!

I know I may be stretching it but I can be certain of this, God loves community.  He has wired us with a need to be with others and the Super Bowl can often be a great opportunity for this.  Whether it’s your neighbors, office friends, or even just your family, the Super Bowl has become a national event that attracts everyone’s attention – even your kids.  Use this as a reason to get together and laugh at the commercials, cheer for a team, and eat things you would never eat on a normal Sunday night.  And whether or not God cares about the game, He cares about the people who play it… and watch it.  So enjoy! And go Falcons!
